I'm so fucking swamped. I have to get in contact with my job in DC for IAP, get a hold of my uncle and make sure it's okay I stay with him for a full month. Figure out what the fuck I'm rwriting for my research paper, finish my matlab code for the water rocket this friday, do my unfied pset, study for the 18.03 exam this friday and be ready enough for it that I can spend friday standing outside launching my rocket before hand. I'm doing my unified lab all by myself because my lab partner is frankly a sorority-cunt that is apparently incapable of doing something other than drinking and puking with frat boys on the weekend. My inbox is at 0 only because i was bad and highlighted the 40 unread but only mildly important emails and archived them instead of reading. And my drafts folder is about 3 times it's normal size because i just haven't had a fuckin moment to finish any of the goddamn emails I need to send :(

And it's only tuesday.

I've gotten to the part of term where everything is bleak and unhappy and I can't imagine surviving because even though the end of the tunnel is not that far off there's atleast three fuckin bullet trains between me and it and I need to figure out a way to survive their passing before I'll even glimpse the light.

So I decided to start cleaning out all the drafts marked elljay-posts, so that maybe I'll feel a little bit accomplishment and maybe eventually get to the drafts I need to write.

Tattoos - In the Order I'll be Getting Them

1. Carl Sagan Quote - Unified
But yeah, this idea of my next tattoo idea--Unified has sucked. But even with it sucking and making me hate life and everyone on this fuckin planet, I still find myself stopping to stare at the moon when I walk home at 4 am, or spending long minutes starring at Hubble images. And it occurred to me that no matter how much I'm hating my major right now, I still love the subject matter.

This idea has been germinating in my head for a while, but my recent rewatching of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Journey made me realise what I really want to mark my successful passing (crossing fingers) of Unified in the spring.

Carl Sagan quote, "We are star stuff which has taken it's destiny into it's own hands." or a shorter version "We are made of star-stuff." I love the longer quote, but the shorter one would allow for a more diverse tattoo options especially if I'd want to incorporate it into an image as sort of a companion piece for tattoo number 2. Problem is I don't associate images with Sagan as much as I as I do words. But I'm thinking maybe a constellation or something? I may wait until the end of this term or next to decide. I don't think I want to do something very big, which sorta leaves manned vehicles out of the running, but who knows.

Eddie took this photo of the sky when we were meteor watching on Tuesday evening out in Concord. I spent the whole evening beating people at meteor sitings (9 biatches!!) and staring at Orion. You can see him there in the middle, with Sirius below him. It was beautiful. I'm thinking I might somehow incorporate him into my design.

2. Pterry Quote - Master Diver
I plan to get this when I get my Master Diver's certification: The quote is by Terry Pratchett and is the basis of one of my favourite short stories and mentioned by my favourite character in my favourite Discworld book (The monk Lu Tze in Nightwatch and the short story based off it is called, "The Sea and the Litte Fishes" it's about Granny Weatherwax)

"The big sea does not care which way the little fishes swim." Is the quote and I'm planning on having it incorporated into this image. Probably just with the fishes swimming about the words or something.

3. Stargate Tattoo - Graduation
This is gonna be a big deal. I'm getting it when I graduate from MIT for obvious reasons (I decided on MIT and course 16 because of SG-1)

It'll be an armband on my right arm done in shades of grey and browns to mimic gold and silver (like on my snitch tattoo)

4. Back Tattoo - First NASA Paycheck
I've been planning this tattoo since I was 13 and it has gone through a myriad of ideas: from Ruth the White Dragon to a compilation of all the American manned space vehicles. I think I've landed on an idea I really like, but I've got quite a few years before I need to make a decision :)

The more I look at back tattoos the more I want something that is offcenter. Not a central design along the spine, but one that rises from the back of my right hip to the back of my left shoulder. I've seen some gorgeous phoenix tattoos that do this, but I'm thinking of leaning more towards a sea animal. I saw the most beautiful side piece of a whale and a squid fighting, which really caught my imagination, but I don't know how I would like the look of a squid or whale on my back.

I would really like to get the gentian marque I designed, but I don't know if years from now I'll regret getting a symmetric design over a more free from flowing one I feel would fit me better.

I could still see me getting Ruth the White Dragon done on my back (from McCaffrey's books), but considering how my body has reacted to white ink in my snitch I am very hesitant to get a tattoo that would be heavy on white. Another idea I've been toying around with is somehow getting a representation of the space program (which was kinda what I was attempting to do with the gentian tattoo) either using the ships, or the planets and stars.

Which makes me think I should do something with Great A'tuin, which satisfies my want for a sea and spaced themed tattoo. It would be him/her with the elephants and the discworld, probably similar to the image below, and maybe add in some real world space stuff like an apollo capsule or mars (might as well go completely ridiculous :))

"Great A'Tuin the turtle comes, swimming slowly through the interstellar gulf, hydrogen frost on his ponderous limbs, his huge and ancient shell pocked with meteor craters. Through sea-sized eyes that are crusted with rheum and asteroid dust He stares fixedly at the Destination.

In a brain bigger than a city, with geological slowness, He thinks only of the Weight. Most of the weight is of course accounted for by Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen, the four giant elephants upon whose broad and startanned shoulders the disc of the World rests, garlanded by the long waterfall at its vast circumference and domed by the baby-blue vault of Heaven." - From Colour of Magic

Lawl, that's very cut and pasted so my tense changes a lot. But I'm feeling a lot less panicky and ready to maybe grab some food and get to work on my pset. I've got an hour of free time, and I think I can probably get one problem done in that time.

And as always, MIT has killed any chance I had at doing Nano :( But i really like this idea so it's just gonna get pushed over to next year.

*is still immensely proud that I drew that Stargate band XP*

I'm sorry MIT is sucking so hard right now, but I know that you will stand victorious after dodging all those trains. *HUGSES*

And also, all of your tattoo ideas are so cool! I'm trying to think of something I could get while I'm here, but my lack of imagination is put to utter shame by your choices. D:

I love that stargate image so much! And on top of it being just an awesome design and how much i love stargate, it also be there as a reminder of our awesome (if often incredibly lazy ;)) friendship! Btw, are you still possibly thinking of getting it?

I feel like if there were periods of time when it wasn't so awful i'd be able to handle the awful bits better but it just doesn't get better. It gets worse and worser and worsest :(

yeah, you should definitely get something over there! and don't forget missy, you came up with my fav idea!! You're definitely creative enough to come up with something brilliant :)

Since you're not reading email: would you like me to drop by sometime with cookies? It sounds like you're way busy to hang out, but anything to help you kick ass on your 18.03 exam :)

ps: if your lab partner is consistently that awful, consider checking in with the TAs about it; they will probably want to know for grading, and might be able to do something helpful about it, idk?

Yeah we will be switching up partners on for the next lab. It was just really frustrating because I switched to having her as my lab partner for this lab because I thought she'd be less flaky than my previous lab partner. Bad idea :-/

I'd love for cookies sometime, but I'm cloistering myself in a cluster and the lab to study for the remainder of the weekend and Monday 'cause omg two tests Tuesday. Which just means I have no frelling idea where I'll be 'cause I like to change clusters every couple of hours to keep myself from going crazy

The Stargate one is great. I want to see it when it's done.
